My understanding of the maximum number of seats we need in the sanctuary is 220.
Analysis:
If we use all the parking spaces (including the ones we are not supposed to use right now) there are about 100 parking spots.
I have read several places online to count 2 people (adults & kids) per car, but Dave said his experience is more like 2.5 = 250 people.
Assume approximately 1/3 of those people are 18 or under = 84 kids, 166 adults.
But of those 84 kids 1/3 should be Middle & High School = 28 Of those 28 a little over 1/3 should be high school = 10 high school kids who will also sit in the service.
Total number of occupied seats for maximum parking lot capacity: 176.
Then people say you should only assume 80% of your seats will be filled because beyond that people think it is too crowded, so if we want the number filled to be 176, the total number of seats should be 220.
220 should be the magic number of seats we hope to one day place in the sanctuary.
Do people agree? Is there some other reason it is critical to find space for many more chairs?

I think many of Steve's layout designs include all (300+? I don't know the exact number) the chairs.
Is there a reason we shouldn't try to put as many chairs as we can in the main area? 220 gives us a nice range where we can remove chairs as needed from the "every single chair" setup, but have a minimum in mind so we don't go overboard.

Should we start with 220 to give us more flexibility of movement but keep the 300+ diagram handy for larger events? We will undoubtedly learn a lot about traffic flow in the first few weeks of actual use. Either way, Doug will probably have to move some chairs each week until the end of September ;-)

The 220 is our starting place. When we get to that size, we have the option of squeezing more seats in and figuring out parking, or going to two services. We'll have to pray at that point to see how God leads. Otherwise, we could want more seats if we host a conference or special event; again, we would have to figure out parking in that event, but there are options, like using the west side of the building for parking. I wouldn't start with trying to get as many seats as possible in there--it makes the room feel empty. I would shoot for roughly 50-60% full, which feels good but still leaves plenty of space for people to find seats.

All of the church space planning stuff I have read recommends sanctuary size as 15-17 sq. ft. Per person. Our space is roughly 3,800 sq. ft, so 224-253 people according to that calc per service max.

I'm working on a blog post about the worship space where Dave suggested I use a starting figure of 150 seats. I'm assuming that is what we own now and we won't plan to purchase more until they are actually needed. Can we get some images that show how we would set up at that size?
