Hello all, Anita asked me to explore the idea of a corner stage in the SE corner. At first I was skeptical because some people would be farther from the stage. However, as I got into it the concept appears to have merit. It yields an interesting space with a non-traditional appeal. It has good separation of function with the stage on one end and the food and other activities in the rear. Exiting from the space is good. The kitchen is on the north wall because of all the utilities. It is enlarged to be big enough to handle fellowship dinners and banquets. Next to it is a ‘starbucks’ styled area for Sunday refreshments which has a lower ceiling with down lighting to give it a more personal scale and help define that as a separate space. The kitchen and ‘starbucks’ area still have to be developed. There is extra floor space in front of the food area for people to mingle, and a natural place for congregating or seating is along the windows where some tables were added. The tables could optionally be stand up cocktail tables. At the last prayer meeting someone had the idea of not only a food area but also a bookstore. A small one was added in the NW corner adjacent to where people are already gathering with its own low ceiling. The normally wasted space in the back corner of a stage of this shape is a great place for the drummer. It is out of the way allowing plenty of room for the other musicians and speaker. The stage was made a little lower trying to make space for a center screen over the drum shield. Or there can be two screens on the side walls. Both options are shown. Some fine tuning of dimensions may still be needed and trying to add a little on stage storage. The previous concept with the stage on the west wall is being adjusted to allow more space adjacent to the food area and try to solve a couple problems. Steve Citko

I like the look of these. And, ignoring other considerations, this is probably my favorite floor plan for the stage/hospitality separation.
However, I have concerns: * What about storage? We will need more storage space than that afforded by the 11x12 corner allotted for storage in these designs. * This plan makes it impractical to use the Office/Conference room as a nursing mother's area. The door is too close to the stage for mom's to slip out unobtrusively to nurse, and the other option for getting into the room requires walking far around the building. Additionally, there is no space in the sanctuary to put a nursing area. That leaves us without a space for nursing moms. * I don't see a welcome area for visitors, as Lauren has requested. I guess you might be able to fit one in the SW corner? Or replace the bookstore with a Welcome area.

Also, is there a sound booth in these diagrams?

Okay, thinking about this more. What about halving the size of the kitchen by making the far NW corner a Nursing Mom's Room? We would still have the problem of not enough storage. BUT we could use the area for storage for now, while Nursing Mom's Room still fits in the Kids area. When the Kids attendance grows and they need the Nursing Mom's space, we could move the Nursing Mom's room to the NW corner, and rent an additional space somewhere for storage. It might be easier (because location and shape does not matter as much) and cheaper (because the space would not have to be as nice) to rent storage space than it would be to try to rent additional space that we could make work for Kids Church.

I like this more than I thought I would. It makes prayer ministry front and center, and gives plenty of space between prayer and fellowship area.
I wonder how much storage we need--I think we could make do with the 11x12 area--it's more than we have now.
I think moms could still use the office for a nursing area. There is no way to make their departure completely unobtrusive, but it doesn't seem unreasonable for them to walk around the back of the room to get there.
I would want a welcome area more than a bookstore, if it comes to choosing. We could include a simple book table as part of the welcome area if we wanted to.

A number of improvement were made. Look for the 7-1-2015 file. The prior schemes all assumed the exhaust hood would be removed to make room for a refreshment area. When I looked at the hood the other day it is quite massive. It is best to leave it in place. It may be costly to move and the university might not want to. I therefore continued a wall in line with the suspended wall incorporating the hood and making the kitchen larger. I had doubts whether the kitchen was large enough before, but this will be a very workable kitchen. Kristin had an idea of using a cloth or vinyl canopy. I oringally was thinking about a cantilevered lower ceiling over the refreshment area, but it would need structural capability to hold up a worker. A canopy made out of soft material saves a lot of work and cost. the refreshment area is simplified into linear counters partially under the canopy. A little book nook is in the corner. Sorry left off sound booth but it will be near rear of center seating. Curtains were added behind stage as a backdrop to give hierarchy to that area and act as an inexpensive way to have on stage storage. A lot of churches have welcome tables in the lobby or just outside the sanctuary. I also added a small table for when the service starts the host can be in the sanctuary. I am sure there will be more refinements and will add some labeling.

I wonder how much storage we need--I think we could make do with the 11x12 area--it's more than we have now. I think moms could still use the office for a nursing area. There is no way to make their departure completely unobtrusive, but it doesn't seem unreasonable for them to walk around the back of the room to get there. I don't think we can get by with 11x12 storage space. If you add up all the different storage space we currently use at Kingsland, it adds up to significantly more than the 11x12 area. Additionally we are going to own many more things that will have to be stored in this new space. (Nathan has mentioned scaffolding & chair dolly; the required folding tables alone will take up a significant amount of storage space; there will be a significant amount of janitorial supplies required; and there are always the sanctuary decorations that accumulate.) I think we have to put more time and focus into thinking realistically about the amount of storage space we will need. It isn't sexy like coffee bars & stage design, but if we end up having to store our folding tables in the sanctuary along the side because we didn't plan for enough storage space it will really degrade the aesthetics that we are working to perfect. As far as using the office for the Nursing Moms in this configuration -- the problem is not walking around the back of the sanctuary. That is fine. The problem is that the door to the office is *RIGHT BESIDE* the stage. It would be EXCEEDINGLY awkward for me to as a nursing mom to have to walk to the front of the room--drawing the attentions of everyone in the sanctuary--to get to the area to nurse my baby. There is another entrance into the office, but that requires walking out the door, down to the main lobby, and back through a long hall. It is a significant hike, and one I don't think we can ask moms to make. I am steadfast in the insistence that the Nursing Mom's Room in the office is a very poor solution for this layout. (Which is, by the way, my favorite layout...if we can resolve the storage & Nursing Moms dilemmas.) I still really like reducing the size of the kitchen and making part of that area an eventual Nursing Mom's area.

For what it's worth, I'm not a huge fan of the corner layout. It looks nice but I think the stage will feel cramped and it pushes many of the seats very far from the stage.

I have to agree with Jonathan. I'm also concerned with the size of the stage. What are the dimensions? If you have a drum set, some guitars, mics, and speakers on the stage how much more room will there be? Say there was a really great drama from a really great small group that's coming this fall...would there be enough room? Or a family dedication, etc...
