I noticed that 2 teams stated they would like to use the existing desk for their purposes on Sundays.
This should probably be discussed more because of the limited size of that desk.
What do you all think? Should we have a dance off between Doug and Hillary?

I'll take that challenge just to see Doug bust a move! I talked to Doug briefly on Saturday. My understanding from the discussion was that he wanted someone from Kid's Church to be out there too... Is that correct Doug?

I'm going to mention this here because it seems relevant... I think we should minimize the amount of 'welcome stuff' we have out in the common area anyway so there wouldn't be much stuff there and sharing the desk should be easy.
But if not, can I be a dance-off judge?

I think it will be a task to minimize mingling and cavorting In that main area, seems a great place to do so and to have greeting going on...
As far as greeting goes. I envision a very nicely done portable welcome sign/station greeting people to VCD...
what would make you feel welcome? I think that it really eases nerves when you know where to find answers without having to interrupt a stranger... The info table or welcome area is for that... It is clear and you know people are ready and waiting to help.

I agree with a nicely done portable welcome sign. There definitely needs to be greeters and big, clear signs in the lobby space. I was picturing keeping it simple though, with the main welcome station just inside the door to our main meeting room. That way we can make it really nice with a lot of information, without having to make all that portable. Plus, it allows visitors to peruse whatever information we have in a big room with food nearby and more people around, not keeping them isolated in the lobby. Part of the greeters job would be to escort visitors to that area. How does that sound?

Kristin is working on ideas for the lobby, so be sure that all your ideas make it to her thread. Sean mentioned that the welcome for the kids area is happening inside the kids room. Is he still working on that idea? He also mentioned receiving the little kids though the door in the hallway, but that seems like it will bottleneck.
How about if we create a welcome display near the cafe in the SE corner? I've got my directions mixed up, but it would be to the right of where the stage is right now. That way they can have coffee, look for small groups and have someone to chat to while having coffee:)

The plan for kids church is that kids check in inside their classrooms. There are 4 separate classrooms, each with its own door onto the hall.
However, there needs to be a central location for the Kids Church welcome desk--the place visitors fill out new attendee forms, get their welcome gift bags, find out which rooms their kids go to, etc.

The original plans for kids church did have a check-in desk inside the glass door area, but we've changed that. Regarding receiving little kids through the hall door, I think there might have been a miscommunication. That is the door we plan on using for the nursery entrance, but I don't see it causing a traffic flow problem...

Right, and the plan is also to have a receiving area inside each door so kids/parents move inside the room, check in, the child walks through/is handed over a gate into the play area, and then the parent leaves.

Anita, I think it would be more welcoming to have the display where you first enter the room.

It would be nice to have someone out front to direct parents to the appropriate space.

Anita, I think it would be more welcoming to have the display where you first enter the room. What kind of display? Are you thinking of a pop-up display like from a trade show? Those are really expensive (or tend to look really cheap) and a pain in the rear to assemble and light. I would focus on upgrading the couches, lighting, plants and artistic appeal of this space and keep communication-type signs to a minimum. We could produce a nice removable backdrop for the kiosk with the church name/theme/logo and a directional arrow to the worship area and kids' area.

Elizabeth, I agree that we should keep communication type signs to a minimum in the lobby. We should aim for things that can be permanent. I wasn't clear in my comment, but I meant to have the welcome center just inside the door to the main sanctuary, NOT in the lobby.
